Vintage Label Love

We had another visit to the County costume archive this week and found some super items we are currently shortlisting for our exhibition.

We came across some fantastic labels on garments, including below: A Lanvin - French couture label on a gorgeous quilted velvet evening jacket and a CC41 - 'Controlled Commodity 41' the utility clothing label:

This is a very early example of a label on a 1920s dressmaker-made dress, with a size label '42' inside:

We wish clothes could talk! We'd love to know how a dress exclusive to a dress shop in Cincinatti came to be in Worcestershire!

'Marshall & Snellgrove is a great vintage label to look out for, a department store that eventually became part of Debenhams. We have some of their hat boxes we use for display in Second Hand Rose!

  1. So very true! I too often think about the lives of vintage items before they land in our hands and homes, wondering what they would say if they could speak of their decades of life. I'm sure the stories would range from eyebrow raising to heartwarming sweet, scary to beautiful and everything in between.

*PS* Thank you very much, dear Jo, for your wonderfully nice comment on yesterday's vintage outfit post. It's a testament to their quality that you still have your first pair of Freddies five years later - I hope I get that much life out of all of mine as well.

  2. Hi Jessica thanks for stopping by! It would be so great to know all about the clothes we come into contact with. We've been lucky at the museum as sometimes they come with details of their previous owners but never quite as much information as we'd like!

You're very welcome re the comment, it's always a pleasure to visit your blog! Freddies jeans really are great quality and sure they'll serve you well!

    Best wishes
