Reporter Hannah interviewed <a href="http://www.secondhandroseworcester.co.uk/" target="_blank">Clare</a> about wartime fashion and rationing and even took part in the show herself as one of the Land Girls!<br />

<br />
We had a full house for both shows and even had Forces TV come and film the show and behind the scenes for British Forces News! The lovely reporter Hannah even did a turn as a Land Girl for the first show, see her photo on their Facebook page <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ForcesTV/photos/a.753081354716870.1073741828.613832878641719/832323590125979/?type=1&theater">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
A huge thank you must go to our fantastic models! They did such a great job on one rehearsal and just a frantic morning of fittings. We were really pleased with how everyone looked and managed to do fittings, hair, make up and run throughs in just three hours before showtime, and Clare even squeezed in a TV interview!<br />

Look out for our video of the show coming soon, we'll post it on here. In the meantime, here's a few photos from the day.<br />
<br />
Here we all are with our equally fantastic compere in the middle, Suz Winspear, an experienced performer who relished the role as the glamorous lady compere - </div>

For our 1940s Fashion Show!Hey ladies! We're organising a free 1940s/war time fashion show called 'Puttin' on the Blitz' as part of the <i>Fancy Pants </i>programme of events and the Worcester Festival. It's taking place on Saturday 9th August and we're looking for volunteers to bring the fashions of the past to life!<br />
<br />
If you've ever fancied stepping back in time and having a 1940s makeover for the day then sashaying down the catwalk, do get <a href="mailto:fancypants@secondhandroseworcester.co.uk" target="_blank">in touch</a>!<br />
<br />

The 1940s were dominated by the war years, which of course was a huge influence on the fashion of the time out of necessity, restrictions and also respect for the war effort. </div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; min-height: 15px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
Women worked harder than ever but the ‘We Can Do It’ and ‘Of Course I Can’ propaganda of the time meant they also did it with style and pizzazz.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; min-height: 15px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
Certain fabrics and materials were scarce and were valuable resources for the war effort, so UK clothing was rationed from 1941 until 1949. Clothing coupons were required, limiting the amount of clothing people could buy. Rationing increased as the war went on as raw materials became scarcer and more precious, and it became harder and for people to buy new clothes.</div>

The CC41 (Controlled Commodity 1941) label was introduced by the British Government and put on clothing and other items including furniture, designed to meet new standards of utility and non-wastefulness. Clothing was streamlined so that there were no unnecessary pockets, buttons or other details. Hemlines rose again in the Forties to just below the knee for day wear, which meant less fabric was needed to make a dress or skirt. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this meant style was sacrificed, the Government enlisted the help of amongst others, renowned designers Hardy Amies and Norman Hartnell (dressmaker to the Queen) to create the compact CC41 range to boost morale. So a working woman could hold her head high in ‘designer’ utility wear.</div>

The Forties saw more women than ever before join the workforce, taking up posts previously held men who had gone off to fight and many new fashion styles for working women were born from practicality. Everyday clothing took on a practical, patriotic and even a pseudo military look so Women's suits often resembled uniforms. </div>

This was the decade for sharp tailoring on a budget. Despite the long lines and wide shoulders of jackets, the emphasis was on the 'nipped in' waistline for a feminine silhouette, the wide lapels and extreme, padded shoulders accentuated this. It's clear to see that the 'power dressing' trend of the 1980s was directly influenced by the strong working women of the 1940s.</div>

Women literally wore the trousers in this decade and ladies who were young and fit enough were required to work in factories and on the land, if they hadn’t already joined the Voluntary Services or Armed Forces. The high-waisted work pants or slacks, usually had buttons at the side. For the first time wearing trousers became more widespread particularly amongst young working women. It was not always a welcome change though, and some women flatly refused to wear a pair!</div>

As well as sombre, military coloured garments there were also new, bright colours too. These attempted to counteract the limitations in clothes manufacturing and jolly-up outfits. Handmade accessories meant that women were able to change their appearance for relatively little expense. Hats, gloves, bags, scarves and brooches could all be made at home from felt and other materials. Sewing, knitting and crocheting were popular ways to make new items on a budget. Fair Isle knitting patterns were a particularly popular style in Forties Britain for men, women and children, a traditional style that can still be bought today.</div>

The tea dress, afternoon dress or floral day dresses are a key look of this era, and one that's often replicated by re-enactors and Forties enthusiasts. They are usually cotton or rayon shirt-waist, or shirt dresses, in a plain or patterned fabric. The shoulders would be wide, the waist fitted and belted, with a slightly flared skirt ending just below the knee. </div>

Hats were very distinctive in this decade. There were a variety of hat styles and shapes and many hats were homemade from felt or hand knitted, or reconstructed from men’s hats. The ‘tilt’ hat worn angled down on the head was a particular popular hat style, they were often elaborately decorated with flowers or feathers.</div>

Headscarves we're hugely popular, especially worn as turbans, which were a practical way of keeping your hair clean and tidy during a day in the factory, and were a cost effective alternative to a new hat. Turban scarf hats could be tied more elaborately and decorated with feathers for evening wear or for a smart occasion.</div>

Famous Forties hair-dos such as the Amercian 'Victory Roll' were also born out of a practical need for women to keep their hair out of their eyes and out of factory machinery. A Forties gal’s shoe collection was nothing like it is today. It would be limited to just a few pairs: mid-heels, or masculine flat shoes for factory and land army workers. There were higher heels, platforms shoes and wedges around in the Forties, but these were predominately reserved for those who could afford them or for stars of stage and screen. </div>

<span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">Practicality was primary for everyday wear during wartime, but as we can see, that didn't mean that fashion was forgotten. So many key styles of the 1940s e.g: shoulder pads, sharp tailoring, head scarves, tilt hats, platform shoes, floral prints, just to name a few, would be revived at different times all throughout the 20th century, as designers were inspired to revisit and rework some of the icons of this decade.</span></span></span></div>

Have you visited yet?!<br />
<br />
Here's a few photos of behind the scenes when were setting up the exhibition.<br />
<br />
Here <a href="http://www.secondhandroseworcester.co.uk/" target="_blank">Clare</a> is laying out the fabric in the lovely big display case. We used the same fabric that we'd used to cover the top of every mannequin, to create a uniformity:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7IHU0cQFyXBl6a9D4o5qlf6M-B5ZYZBRPXelPV3A3p-pJVCImNEZbu01y-HmNVw_iu5Bw00hRqM0_hflBW8r1SJdwKXcjYzAerIxGufKQY7dmke29chkodQIFmHLTvDb8KoiI3D8N2UBp/s1600/BigDisplayCase.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7IHU0cQFyXBl6a9D4o5qlf6M-B5ZYZBRPXelPV3A3p-pJVCImNEZbu01y-HmNVw_iu5Bw00hRqM0_hflBW8r1SJdwKXcjYzAerIxGufKQY7dmke29chkodQIFmHLTvDb8KoiI3D8N2UBp/s1600/BigDisplayCase.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The idea for the case was for it to represent a shop window display, as the celebration theme is for that era is a VE Day street party, so it continues the street theme. The 1940s room contains more creative, informal display arrangements, this is due in part to it housing the children's activity table. The table is in front of a large, original photo of a VE Day street party so it becomes an extension of the street party celebration theme of the room.<br />
<br />
Here we have the table and photograph installed:<br />

<br />
Here's Clare making a final adjustment to a fantastic 'make do and mend' suit. It's an original, wartime lady's suit that has been fashioned out of a man's suit. We had to pad out a smaller mannequin with wadding and tissue to ensure the suit hung correctly:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A small selection of colourful patterned 1940s clothing hang from our washing line, to further allude to the 'street' element of the street party celebration theme. Here it is partially installed. Ron made us a fantastically authentic washing line!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The main room that houses the 1920s and 30s costume has a much more formal layout. This is a photo of when we were working out what to put where, before the barriers go up. The layout was informed in part by the colour of each dress and how the colours and the numbers of mannequins balanced and worked as groupings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also wanted to make sure that dresses with any interesting rear, side or sleeve detailing, were completely viewable. There's nothing more frustrating in fashion exhibitions when you know there's some interesting detailing round the back but it's completely hidden!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When it came to the final layout, two dresses from our original selection were dropped from the 1920s section. This child's embroidered 1920s dress is lovely but it didn't look it's best on the mannequin. It didn't quite hang right and it needed a full slip underneath to make it look its best. By removing it altogether we also had a better balance of mannequins for display:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ICsXZc3g_F1INVxCmRiGIgs14gla3o7qkEhiThIvj_m0qpqumJ_LHWknz-5Yv97qHXJWxSQNNcx3VQ0Zv29jNmuQ3nNIFqItCB8Da7UaIo4NWF57nILWF3IC0rDjy-kM2NWoJPGgae9M/s1600/1920sDressNotUsed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ICsXZc3g_F1INVxCmRiGIgs14gla3o7qkEhiThIvj_m0qpqumJ_LHWknz-5Yv97qHXJWxSQNNcx3VQ0Zv29jNmuQ3nNIFqItCB8Da7UaIo4NWF57nILWF3IC0rDjy-kM2NWoJPGgae9M/s1600/1920sDressNotUsed.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This 1920s silk dress also didn't make the final cut. The pale off-white fabric didn't look great against the bright white walls, especially next to much more detailed dresses containing some similar colours and it didn't hang well either. Although the long, pointy collars are a great feature of 1920s and early 1930s clothing, it was one of those rare occasions when an item of clothing looked disappointingly lacklustre when put on a mannequin! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also had the issue of balancing the number of mannequins, and felt this was another that was best left out, rather than squeezed in for the sake of it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the last jobs on the final day of setting up was making up some frames of interesting ephemera from the 1940s. Here's Clare picking some pictures and articles from original magazines:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9XDzn2PNg9v_xggKyOXR8pzjCWokhKutJGTOgwd-bWnjphbjad7KTd7j_Gjca1z1MkixSw-tRg_ng-9FdHdEiPGRh2IfWCZuE7uJb4iT6z1u0r82VrngKgbqalPPJdpz4o5Re3F8Hhm9e/s1600/Looking-throughMags.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9XDzn2PNg9v_xggKyOXR8pzjCWokhKutJGTOgwd-bWnjphbjad7KTd7j_Gjca1z1MkixSw-tRg_ng-9FdHdEiPGRh2IfWCZuE7uJb4iT6z1u0r82VrngKgbqalPPJdpz4o5Re3F8Hhm9e/s1600/Looking-throughMags.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
We also filled three frames of original photos from the 1920s to the 40s, as well as original greetings cards that worked perfectly with the celebration theme. Here's Jo putting the finishing touches to the 1930s frame with a hand coloured photo of her Great Aunt Gwen as the centre piece:<br />

In the Thirties hemlines fell as well as the economy, with the stock market crash of 1929. From now on hemlines would be seen to reflect the general state of economic affairs. The difficult years that followed for many, finished off the flippant flapper-era and ushered in a more grown up decade. </div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; min-height: 15px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
The 1930s took over the fashion reigns from the revolutionary Twenties and the explosion of the modern, media age developed women's clothing into new, and glamorous never before seen styles. Where the Twenties nada been about suppressing a woman’s natural shape, the Thirties were all about embracing it.<br />
<br />
Construction of clothing saw great innovations with new, manmade and synthetic fabrics and the first commercial use of the zip in clothing manufacture. Despite this, it’s still quite rare to find a zip in everyday, handmade dresses of the Thirties. Side fastenings using press studs or hooks and eyes are the most common. The popularization of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bias_(textile)" target="_blank">bias-cut</a> dresses, which gave fabrics more stretch provided clever new concepts for fit and drapery. </div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; min-height: 15px; text-align: justify;">

The Thirties have been dubbed the 'golden age' of Hollywood. Every women looked to the stars of the silver screen for fashion inspiration as well as escapism. It was the first time that designers in Paris we’re not the trendsetters as Hollywood studios didn’t want their stars to be seen in dated fashions once their films were released, so designers for the studios became famous for creating looks that every women wanted. </div>

Large ruched and ruffled sleeves are a key feature on day and evening dresses of this era. The 1932 Joan Crawford film '<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023132/" target="_blank">Letty Lynton</a>' is famous for influencing this look with a dress designed by Hollywood designer Adrian.</div>

Ordinary girls longed for the revealing, clinging gowns of the starlets, to make an entrance at their local dance hall. Although hemlines had dropped there were still outrages to be caused: this was the first time that women’s clothing was overtly sexy and newly favoured were strappy, backless, figure hugging gowns for evening wear. </div>

With 1920s style being huge this summer, still down largely to the huge success of Downton Abbey no doubt, it seemed an obvious focal point! <div>These dreamy stylish scenes have set the theme for many a wedding, birthday or celebration so looking the part is a must. We show a few sneaky peaks of the beaded and lace delights being displayed from Saturday to help fashionistas get the look!<div>Jo is looking great despite it being halfway through a busy prep day, spot the resemblance with her Great Aunt pictured bottom right. The 1920s beauty and our modern day gal have similar faces, especially smiles don't they?</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lKB73OrGWqk/U7xW02jek2I/AAAAAAAAAoc/khVyCz1Q1fw/s640/blogger-image-1664190202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lKB73OrGWqk/U7xW02jek2I/AAAAAAAAAoc/khVyCz1Q1fw/s640/blogger-image-1664190202.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">As a blog reader we'd love to see you at the private view this Friday evening from 6.30pm. Cocktails and Ukeleles will accompany the first viewing of the county collection of 20th Century style, hopefully see you there! </div><br></div><div><br></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16397817929608697985noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6331265951848351691.post-66480236084484062302014-07-06T12:15:00.001+01:002014-07-06T12:15:10.838+01:001930s culture at Madame Tussaud's!Madame Tussaud's is one of our favourite tourist attractions, there is something slightly macabre seeing effigies you recognise from history books to Heat magazine all immortalised meticulously in wax, getting to pose next to your favourite movie star or perhaps serial killer makes for a great photo for the mantlepiece! <div>This morning, at the local Carboot sale I found this fabulous original tour guide to Madame Tussaud's. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dBFMVqRKyRs/U7kscYy4k7I/AAAAAAAAAng/B-iFQyebClM/s640/blogger-image--221064865.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dBFMVqRKyRs/U7kscYy4k7I/AAAAAAAAAng/B-iFQyebClM/s640/blogger-image--221064865.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In great condition, I imagine this was a souvenir kept for years from a special day out in London, as we might do today, put into a cupboard and forgotten about, but too good to throw away! I studied the museum during my art degree, and always felt there was more to it than the slight 'side show' appeal for the curious public, there's a great quote at the beginning of the guide saying 'the proper study of mankind is Man' I feel Fancy Pants is of the same vane, original clothing worn by real people is a fantastic way to see what was happening in the past, what people wore to work in, to dance in or even sleep in is a reflection of the era, and tells its own stories.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N4X52mpE964/U7kseIcO1nI/AAAAAAAAAnw/20RCNt0mkt8/s640/blogger-image--314225340.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N4X52mpE964/U7kseIcO1nI/AAAAAAAAAnw/20RCNt0mkt8/s640/blogger-image--314225340.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">One of the things that fascinates me especially about these waxworks is how despite the hours that have gone into them, that they are now pretty transient, moving onto the next big celebrity quickly to keep people coming through the doors to get that make believe snap next to a pop sensation, 'ohh I thought he'd be taller than that!'</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Flicking through this catalogue it is an interesting social comment to see those who were chosen important or interesting enough to portray in wax. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-US0m_400Bs8/U7kvvc9oOJI/AAAAAAAAAoM/GXoLeE8XJsA/s640/blogger-image--163524857.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-US0m_400Bs8/U7kvvc9oOJI/AAAAAAAAAoM/GXoLeE8XJsA/s640/blogger-image--163524857.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">As you can see, the 'music, stage and screen' section is very small in the museum, as is the sports section. The most part of the exhibits are historical, political or religious figures, far more serious and educational than the celebrity driven tastes of today! Although I think the royal hall, and presidential section still reflects the layouts I remember..</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-yE-SYKQYD0s/U7kvteaLAqI/AAAAAAAAAn8/8MJBJJSFKFw/s640/blogger-image-1055141648.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-yE-SYKQYD0s/U7kvteaLAqI/AAAAAAAAAn8/8MJBJJSFKFw/s640/blogger-image-1055141648.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">As often with old printed matter there are some brilliant adverts throughout</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Ua7QtO-c6Ps/U7ksdOrAs9I/AAAAAAAAAno/cLq4KwBr5MQ/s640/blogger-image-305046439.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Ua7QtO-c6Ps/U7ksdOrAs9I/AAAAAAAAAno/cLq4KwBr5MQ/s640/blogger-image-305046439.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And my favourite...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Lmu97SLEahI/U7kvuLyTntI/AAAAAAAAAoE/CtYd5opWcf0/s640/blogger-image--484648190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Lmu97SLEahI/U7kvuLyTntI/AAAAAAAAAoE/CtYd5opWcf0/s640/blogger-image--484648190.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">What a handsome chap! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">We have a busy week at Fancy Pants HQ coming up now, five days until the opening party, 6.30pm until 8.30pm, hope to see you all there!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16397817929608697985noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6331265951848351691.post-86331267544937388962014-07-04T20:44:00.000+01:002014-07-04T20:44:23.830+01:00Full Steam Ahead!There's just one week to go until our exhibition opens and that means it's literally full steam ahead now to get all the preparations finished and ready for display.<br />
<br />
This week we teamed up with costume conservator specialist Althea Mackenzie. It's been great working with Althea who works for the National Trust, is an <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=althea+mackenzie" target="_blank">author</a> and is super knowledgeable about how best to steam and display delicate fabrics!<br />
<br />
We've been working in the fantastic <a href="http://www.whub.org.uk/cms/museums-worcestershire/city-art-gallery-and-museum/things-to-see-and-do/star-attraction/chemist-shop.aspx" target="_blank">Chemist's Shop</a> area of the Museum and Art Gallery, until we can install next week. It's been great to see all the costumes on the dress forms.<br />

Here's a sneaky picture of behind the scenes. These are just some of the dresses waiting to be steamed and the dress forms waiting to be 'dressed' and made uniform:<br />

</div>
Whilst researching the County Costume Archives for our forthcoming exhibition, one of our favourite discoveries were all the original 1920s beaded, fabulous flapper dresses!<br />
<br />
Sadly not all of them were suitable to be displayed as these were some of the oldest and most delicate pieces from the 1920s and it most cases the heaviest too with all that beading! So unfortunately we couldn't risk the dresses not standing up to hanging from a dress form and possibly shedding beads and deteriorating the already delicate fabric.<br />
<br />
Luckily though we found a few more robust pieces in the collection and these will be on display in our flapper corner, and some more intricate beading on display in a case.<br />
<br />
Flapper dresses are only part of the story of 1920s fashion, but one that seems to have really caught people's imaginations and have become an icon of that era.<br />
<br />
If you are lucky enough to own your own original 1920s flapper dress then it's worth knowing a few things about storing it properly to preserve its life. Remember to store it flat in a box wrapped in acid free tissue paper, away from heat or light sources, as the museum does. These dresses don't survive if hung from hangers as the weight of the beading will eventually cause tears at the top of the dresses. Never be tempted to wash these dresses especially if they have sequins on them, these will dissolve in water (and just heat!) as early sequins were made from gelatine!<br />
<br />
Here's a few teaser photos of just some of the amazing 1920s beaded dresses in the County collection. As you can see the vibrancy of the glass beading and embroidery hasn't faded and some of the designs are so intricate!<br />

Our vintage fashion exhibition <i>Fancy Pants</i> will look at themes of celebration in each of the three decades covered. For the 1920s we decided to focus on a wedding celebration. The County Costume Archives has some wonderful examples of 1920s wedding dresses that we had to narrow down to just a couple to show. We will also be looking at the wider wedding party and what would have also been worn by mothers, sisters, aunties and friends etc, as well as the blushing brides themselves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a selection of original 1920s wedding photos to give a flavour of a 1920s wedding and sets the scene for our big day when Fancy Pants opens!</div>

1920s fashion has seen a recent revival of interest and ignited contemporary designers imaginations again, thanks to recent films such as The Great Gatsby and everybody's favourite Downton Abbey! Here's a brief overview of 1920s fashion that we put together for our book <i>Wearable Vintage Fashion</i>.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
The women’s Suffrage movement of the early 1900s encouraged the new generation of liberated, young women to cast off their corsets, shake off the stuffy formality of their parents' Victorian and Edwardian era and embrace life after the tragedy and uncertainty of the war years.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; min-height: 15px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
Social, political and economic changes following the First World War were the reasons for significant transformations in attitudes and style, and it could be argued that the Twenties witnessed the first ever youth movement. It was the era of Art Deco which dominated all aspects of design including fashion and jewellery. Designers indulged in the new, modernist shapes and patterns.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho4IbMelrFK2N2fEAzIFb7TkdNph8s3arrNA-tCqE5bO-XMLoSJRypquZr2_jtKK2WF3KQlpD-BXVMIC3LDTFc2YrNLa7XhyzqFM150v-qEs3o02YIo7kTyN63cJXqvJ_nBGnXjmZXSLms/s1600/20sPhotos.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho4IbMelrFK2N2fEAzIFb7TkdNph8s3arrNA-tCqE5bO-XMLoSJRypquZr2_jtKK2WF3KQlpD-BXVMIC3LDTFc2YrNLa7XhyzqFM150v-qEs3o02YIo7kTyN63cJXqvJ_nBGnXjmZXSLms/s1600/20sPhotos.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; min-height: 15px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
It was a revolutionary time for women's fashion but it didn't happen over night, it began slowly and as with most innovations in fashion, started with high end fashion houses pioneering new designs. Coco Chanel is credited with transforming high society women at this time with her use of jersey materials, trousers and abolishing the corset. 'Sports wear' became popular everyday fashion as society seemed to relax its formality and previous conventions after the war. It was the birth of modern fashion as we know it. </div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
Chanel’s fashion message of the importance of looking effortlessly stylish soon caught on and by the mid Twenties, the lines between social classes blurred for the first time in fashion history. What most people think of as the classic 20s look: the short bobbed hair, knee length dresses and cloches were universal for all ages and social sets. The cloche hats themselves required the shorter bobbed hair-do in order to wear them successfully. </div>

From this new breed of liberated, independent minded women, an androgynous fashion trend also transpired, beginning in the upper classes. An even shorter 'Eton crop' hair cut was sported, so named as it resembled a school boy’s hair cut. Wide legged trousers or 'pyjamas' were worn for leisure, on the beach and for sport. Sportswear gained in wider popularity for all. These ‘Bright Young Things’ were trendsetters and were well turned out in daring and decadent looks. Celebrity culture hit the headlines and stylish snaps accompanied salacious stories. </div>

The Flapper dress is what really epitomizes the popular view of the Twenties and the ethos of the ‘Bright Young Things’. The classic flapper evening dress is knee length, sleeveless, with a drop waist, and is usually heavily beaded or sequined. The Twenties were heavy on the embellishments for evening wear: ladies were keen to be seen. Evening bags were small and beaded, there were also bead fringes on bags and dresses. Fur was everywhere for coats and trimmings for day and night. Coats would quite often have large fur collars and cuffs and the archetypal style was a wrap over coat fastened with one button, just below the waistline.</div>

Sparkly, beaded embellishments are synonymous with the opulence of the art deco era.<br />
<br />
We've been discovering some amazing examples of embellished dresses in the County Costume Archive, and have been choosing some corkers for display in the 1920s and 1930s sections of our exhibition.<br />
<br />
We still can't give too much away at the moment, but here are a few close up examples. We can say that out of this little lot, 6 of the 8 shown will be on display and they are fabulous!<br />

We had another visit to the County costume archive this week and found some super items we are currently shortlisting for our exhibition. </div>

We came across some fantastic labels on garments, including below: A Lanvin - French couture label on a gorgeous quilted velvet evening jacket and a CC41 - 'Controlled Commodity 41' the utility clothing label:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Original, old family photographs are one of the best resources for researching everyday fashion history. They can tell such fascinating tales and sometimes throw up some surprises!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
That's why we're collecting copies of people's family pictures to create a digital album of photos and memories to help us tell the story of vintage fashion from the 1920s to 1945. They can be from special occasions like weddings or parties, holidays, military or snaps of every day life, as long as they fit into our time frame we'd love to see them!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We already have lots of great photos to choose from but if you'd like to have your photos included in a digital album in our exhibition and see it posted online once the exhibition opens, then all you need to do is <a href="mailto:fancypants@secondhandroseworcester.co.uk" target="_blank">email your photos to us</a>. Tell us about the people in the picture, or if you don't know them, tell us what you like about their clothing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We'd love to hear from you!</div>

As well as photos of a gorgeous gown from the county collection (which we're currently keeping under wraps!) the museum needed some family friendly images to promote the fun, family aspects that will appeal to children during the Summer holidays.<br />
<br />
Our lovely regular<a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/secondhandroseworc"> shop model</a> <a href="http://www.monroedolly.co.uk/" target="_blank">Holly</a> stepped in to help us out again and we dressed her in an amazing, original, 1920s velvet, opera cape, worn over a modern 1930s-style dress in a plain, bold colour.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We're researching the collection to pick out iconic and interesting pieces from 1920 to 1945 to display as part our exhibition in July. On this particular visit we focussed on hats and shoes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgVRjb5wJ0pCY4vyxKsSd9ITLSiJV4jobJccfVHml8X3utLA4qUO-tIqHdDGZOfaPIMXgqCfnyYOMlSVIGomY20nGLRLyHJN0SAhKwkNNry5312jH-Dvs4G10lo-JcAzvHEXUBnpVVe3w/s1600/ClareWithHats.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgVRjb5wJ0pCY4vyxKsSd9ITLSiJV4jobJccfVHml8X3utLA4qUO-tIqHdDGZOfaPIMXgqCfnyYOMlSVIGomY20nGLRLyHJN0SAhKwkNNry5312jH-Dvs4G10lo-JcAzvHEXUBnpVVe3w/s1600/ClareWithHats.jpg" height="400" width="273" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sadly we can't show you everything we found as we have to leave the majority for the grand unveiling at the exhibition. We can say that what we did see got us very excited though! We'll be displaying some truly wonderful hats from cloches to 1940s tilt hats, and some really fantastic shoes from fancy flappers gold dancing shoes, to CC41 utility court shoes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were able to make some important decisions of what will be included in the final displays and now have a clearer idea of how they can be displayed as a group, something we can't wait to get stuck in with nearer the time!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Although we can't share a lot at this stage, we can whet your appetite for what is to follow with a few detail images. </div>

<br /></div>
Saturday 30th November will see the launch of the Memory Box!<br />
<br />
Fancy being part of <i>Fancy Pants</i>?! You can contribute to our exhibition 'Fancy Pants: A Celebration of Style 1920 - 1945' by sharing your family photos and memories!<br />
<br />
We're looking for family photos depicting fashions from the 1920s to 1945. Copies of photos (please don't bring originals as we can't return them!) can be deposited in the 'Memory Box' at Worcester Museum or in <a href="http://www.facebook.com/secondhandroseworcester" target="_blank">Second Hand Rose</a>, along with a form telling us about the photo and any stories and memories you have of the person or persons in the pic!<br />
<br />
We're looking for great examples of period clothing in photos from weddings, parties, everyday wear, wartime fashion, military uniform etc, anything that will help us tell the story of our fashion history from the 1920s to 1945.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We're excited to announce that July 2014 will see the launch of our vintage fashion exhibition<br />
<b style="font-style: italic;">Fancy Pants: A Celebration of Style 1920 - 1945 </b>at <a href="http://www.museumsworcestershire.org.uk/" target="_blank">Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery</a>, Foregate Street.<br />
<i><b><br /></b></i>
We're currently researching the County archives and uncovering never before seen vintage fashion treasures from the 1920s to 1945. We'll be showcasing what Worcester wore during these decades in a family friendly exhibition with plenty to set pulses racing for vintage fashion aficionados.<br />
<br />
We'll be documenting our research here on the blog, highlighting vintage details that delight us and giving a behind the scenes view of how we put exhibition together.<br />
